Improving transport efficiency and reducing its negative impacts is a major political objective of the European Union.

Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) promise to play an important role towards this goal. CAVs are indeed expected to be safer and more energy efficient than existing conventional vehicles and to increase the road network capacity. However, the effect of introducing new technologies and solutions in the transport system depends from a multiplicity of factors due to its intrinsic complexity.

While CAVs will eventually become a reality on roads, their success and market penetration rates depend largely on public opinions. Expectations and concerns are essential components to catalyse a faster uptake and final adoption of these technologies. For this reason citizen engagement activities and co-creation processes are gaining ground in order to raise citizen’s awareness, increase their acceptability towards new solutions and accelerate the way on which they adapt their mobility habits.

The Joint Research Centre organises a dedicated co-creation workshop to discuss with participants from Enlargement and Integration (E&I) countries[1] about the possible expectations and concerns about Connected and Automated Mobility.

The support from well renowned scientific experts in the field will contribute to enrich the discussion. The workshop will take place at the JRC Ispra site in Italy. In case travelling will still be problematic due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a virtual or hybrid event will be organised instead.

Objectives

  • Update participants on the results achieved in the last years from the citizen engagement activities organised by the JRC
  • Demonstrate a self-driving vehicle platform (prototype)
  • Promote knowledge exchange, also through open discussions and presentations

Audience

For the workshop the JRC invites researchers and practitioners in the in the field of transport but also people with no transport-related background. The participants would range from automotive to energy, including employees, managers as well as representatives from academia, industry, NGOs, ministries and citizens from E&I countries.

The number of places is limited to a maximum of 20 participants.
